Hamilton’s Lawyers

Hamilton’s Lawyers have played a pivotal role in the development of the Hamilton community.

Through their professional services, they have helped its citizens build their community, resolve their differences, exercise their rights and meet their responsibilities within the majestic framework of the Canadian Rule of Law.

And their contributions have always gone well beyond their professional services. They have consistently and generously contributed their time, talents and resources to countless philanthropic causes and provided robust leadership to the public charities and institutions that give our community its strength and its heart.  

The Lawyers’ Legacy for Children / The Ray Harris Fund (LLC) is intended to collectively nourish the health and welfare of children and young people and to inspire and enable them to develop their knowledge, talents, and values in the same spirit of generosity and community.

In 1954, leaders of the Hamilton bar spearheaded the creation of Hamilton Community Foundation (HCF) as Ontario’s first Community Foundation. In 2008, fifty four years later, The Hamilton Lawyers’ Club entered into a formal agreement with HFC to create the LLC as an HCF Donor Advised Fund.

How the Fund Works

Donations to the LLC are invested by HCF and each year the LLC’s Donor Advisory Committee, (made up of current leaders and members of the Hamilton bar), nominates the recipients of grants that are paid by HCF from the income earned on the funds invested. This endowment model allows the Fund to help children and young people deal with today’s issues while, at the same time, the Fund continues to grow to help them deal with tomorrow’s issues forever.

Hamilton Community Foundation handles the administration of the Fund, including managing its investments, processing donations, issuing tax receipts and distributing grants. For information about the LLC’s history and grants, click “History” or “Grants”.
